Two park days: Optimist and Kiwanis
A quick playground visit or a longer picnic outing? Plan family time at Optimist Park and Kiwanis Park in Tempe.

Some outings are easier when they stay close to home. For guests at The Walcott, Optimist Park is across the street, making it a natural choice for a short playground visit. Kiwanis Park offers a different sort of outing when you want to plan more time away from the house.
Optimist Park: an easy neighborhood pause
The City of Tempe lists a playground, picnic tables, basketball courts, and grills at Optimist Park. You do not need to turn a visit into a major excursion. It can be a place to stretch after a car ride, spend a little time outdoors before lunch, or let different generations find their own pace.
Bring only what you need for the outing: water, a snack, and whatever makes a short trip easier for your children. Check the weather before deciding when to go, and keep younger children with an adult when crossing the road from the house.
Kiwanis Park: make room for a longer wander
Tempe Tourism’s Kiwanis Park guide describes lakefront paths, playgrounds, and water-play facilities. Choose the part of the park you want to visit before heading out, rather than assuming one parking spot is convenient for everything.
If a splash pad or pool is the reason for your outing, check its current operating schedule separately. Park access does not mean every recreation facility is open. Seasonal operation, maintenance, and program schedules can all affect what is available.
Choose the outing that fits the day
For a quick break between plans, choose Optimist. For a picnic and a longer walk, consider Kiwanis. If one child is ready to keep going and another is ready for a nap, a short outing near the house may be the better choice.
There is no need to squeeze both into a single day. Pick a meeting point if your group separates, and settle on a rough return time before everyone starts exploring. A little coordination helps when grandparents, teenagers, and young children are sharing the trip.
A simple picnic plan
Prepare something easy in the home’s kitchen, take a bag for your rubbish, and leave the elaborate meal for another day. Avoid relying on a particular table or grill being available. If a group picnic depends on a reserved facility, check the city’s arrangements first.
Afterward, there is room to regroup at The Walcott. Take a look at the backyard and patio if your family likes to balance outings with time at home.
